Audemars Piguet congratulates Henrik Stenson on his 1st Major

Henrik Stenson won his first Major Championship as he overcame Phil Mickelson in record-breaking fashion in a thrilling final round at The Open on Sunday July 17th. The world number 5 built confidence last month when he won in Germany and felt it was going to be his turn in Scotland at the Major that is dearest to his heart. The Audemars Piguet Ambassador has had one runner-up finish and four third places in Majors prior to this sensational victory.

The 40-year old came into round four with a one-shot advantage over his American rival but the duo played amazingly well in. A birdie on the par three 14th moved Henrik ahead. Then he drained a remarkable 50-foot birdie on the next hole, which allowed the Swede to lead by two shots for the first time all day. Henrik brilliantly maintained the gap and scored his 10th birdie of the day on the last hole to finish at 20 under par for the tournament and beat Mickelson by three shots.

In what will go down as a round of golf for the ages, Henrik broke a host of records. His score of 63 on Sunday equalled the lowest round in Major history and the lowest ever final round by a winner in Open history.  Finally, his 264 aggregate score is the lowest ever in a Major Championship.

Henrik Stenson’s relentless quest for perfection and dedication echoes Audemars Piguet’s philosophy “to break the rules, you must first master them”. The Swiss Haute Horlogerie brand is honoured that the prototype watch he was given to test a month ago, a Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph with blue ceramic pushers and crown specially made for its Golf Dream Team, was adorning Henrik’s wrist when lifting the trophy in Germany and Scotland. As he is hungry for more titles, expect to see Henrik’s lucky charm across the globe in the next few months, including Brazil in August.

The other members of the Audemars Piguet Dream Team of golf ambassadors are Byeong Hun An, Keegan Bradley, Darren Clarke, Victor Dubuisson, Paul Dunne, Branden Grace, Emiliano Grillo, Miguel Á ngel Jiménez, Renato Paratore, Ian Poulter, Peter Uihlein, Lee Westwood, Bernd Wiesberger and Danny Willett. They constitute the finest team of professional golfers in the watchmaking world. Danny Willett notably won his first Major in Augusta last April. His mum being Swedish, he warmly congratulated Henrik in a Twitter post saying “Sweden now have 1 ½ Majors this year”!
